‘Shiranui’ is in Japanese ‘not known fire’, in fact it is the fire that appears in the midsummer night at sea, a kind of phosphorencent light that has been regarded as a phantom phenomenon from ancient times in Japan. It is a phenomenon occuring only in Ariake Sea and Yatsushiro Sea in Japan. At the beginning, one or two fires appear from the coast to the ocean, they split to the left and right, increase the number, and countless fires line up side by side. In recent years, it has been elucidated that it is a mirage, but it is one of the mysterious mirage that happens at night. This time it is ‘Shiranui’ that became a theme to be included in the Mirage series to express ‘alignment’ and ‘fluctuation’ of the fire.

The word giclée was adopted by Jack Duganne, a printmaker working at Nash Editions – a studio that produced fine-art printing. He wanted a name for the new type of prints they were producing on the Iris printer, a large-format, high-resolution industrial prepress proofing inkjet printer they had adapted for fine-art printing. He was specifically looking for a word that would not have the negative connotations of ‘inkjet’ or ‘computer generated’.
